Where the term comes from

The term comes from a research paper published in November 2023 by a team including Princeton University researchers, titled "GEO: Generative Engine Optimization". The authors introduced GEO-bench, a benchmark of queries across many domains, and showed that certain content changes, such as adding statistics, quotations and cited sources, could boost a page's visibility in generated answers by up to 40%.

What changes compared with SEO

The basic unit is no longer the ranked page but the quoted passage. A generated answer blends several sources: Google says its AI features issue multiple related searches across subtopics, a technique called query fan-out, to gather complementary pages. Clicks are fewer but often better qualified, and visibility is also measured in citations and brand mentions. Google adds that no special optimization is required for its AI features beyond standard SEO best practices.

Practical levers

  • Access: allow Googlebot, Bingbot and assistant search crawlers (OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot) in robots.txt and in your firewall or CDN settings.
  • Answer first: one self-contained, quotable sentence under each heading.
  • Evidence: dated figures, official sources, real examples.
  • Freshness: visible update dates and information kept current.
  • Identity: named authors, consistent business details everywhere, customer reviews.
  • Machine readability: key content in HTML text and structured data that matches the visible copy.

Measuring AI visibility

Search Console now offers a performance report for Google's generative AI features, rolled out to all websites as of August 31, 2026: it counts impressions of your links in AI Overviews and AI Mode. In Google Analytics 4, create a channel group for traffic from chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai and copilot.microsoft.com. Add a fixed panel of questions you ask the assistants every month, noting who gets cited.
